The Week Ahead: April 16th to April 20th, 2018

This is a long post, but it has a lot of really important information. Please read it carefully so to not miss any points made!

FSA Reading

On Monday and Tuesday you will meet me (Miss K) in the theater first period. ALL of you, unless you have accommodations. You will be taking the FSA Reading Test both days. The testing sessions are 90 minutes long – so you should be in 4th – 7th. Talk to your 1st – 3rd teachers to see if you are missing any work!

{If you have accommodations, you will go to room 5-105. If you are in that group, please also bring work with you or a book to read. Feel free to stop by Monday morning and borrow a book from my shelf!}

On a good note, we are done for the time being with NoRedInk and CommonLit!

AP Seminar

Your IMP and IWA finals are due on Tuesday night by 11:59 pm to Google Classroom in their respective assignments. The IWA is also due to TurnItIn.com by 11:59 pm Tuesday night.

Presentations will run Wednesday the 18th to Tuesday the 24th. The presentation schedule can be found on Google Classroom. There will be NO before school or after school presentations. These will be recorded on camera so that we have a back up in the case the AP ask for them. I promise not to lose the SD card this time 😉

Here is the self editing worksheet that we used in class to peer edit this week. You may want to do it again, now that you have made your edits! You should aim to also run your essay through a grammar checker (human or robotic) and read through it out loud. You can also backwards outline to see if there is a logical line of reasoning!

Questions to ask prior to thinking you’ve finished your IWA:

  • Has someone else read it after my peer edited and commented upon it?
  • Have I read it backwards to check for spellinggrammar?
  • Did I DOUBLE CHECK my citationsworks cited? Is my works cited page alphabetized & look like the sample in the Bedford Researcher?
  • Did I remove all references to myself, Miss.K, and Boca High? Including in the title of the document?
  • Is it in MLA format?
  • Did I use correct punctuation? (Don’t forget those question marks people!)
  • Is my LOR strong?
  • Does my LOR include a stimulus material as evidence?
  • Did I explain my theme & stimulus connection?
  • Did I submit to TurnItIn.com & Google Classroom?

Questions to ask prior to thinking you’ve finished your IMP:

  • Did I practice my presentation multiple times?
  • Will I finish my presentation within the 6-8 minute window? If  no, what you I need to add/subtract?
  • Are the slides engaging and clear to my audience?
  • Do I have too much text on my slides?
  • When the presentation is on the big screen, is everything clear?
  • Have I practiced the oral defense questions?
  • Did I submit it to Google Classroom?

General Paper

The prompt for GP this week is:

How much importance should government place on raising consumer awareness?

You are focusing on body paragraphs again. You need to write a minimum of three body paragraphs using “CEEE” and all of the other elements we reviewed last week. Remember to create a main claim and also brainstorm. It is helpful if you place your main claim on the paper you submit. That way I have a reference for what your main claim is – which should be referenced to in your body paragraphs.  There is NO draft due this week. Be sure to stop by and get your body paragraphs from last week, so that you do not make the same mistakes again!

These will be due IN CLASS, handwritten on loose leaf paper, with an MLA header by Friday. You MAY turn them in early!

Don’t forget that The Skimm is a great daily resource to say up to date on the news around the world. Sign up here.

You can ALSO go back and watch OLD CNN 10 video’s (also known as CNN Student News). The exam was written about two years ago, so it could be pulling from the current events of that year.

There is an opportunity to take a practice General Paper exam. This is a great practice for the real test day. We will have it set up like the real test, with your candidate number, test booklets, and a script similar to that used by AICE! It will be held from 9:15 am to 11:15 am on Saturday, April 28th. If you are interested in joining, please sign up here.

AICE Global Perspectives

On Friday of this week, I will be giving you a weekend homework assignment to complete an old Global Perspectives exam. We have looked at a few of these, but it’s time to get back into the game. This will be due the following Monday, 4/23! I will post it here by the end of the week.

Spirit Week Information!

I am changing up the extra credit opportunity this time around because I have already given you extra credit for a spirit week. I am challenging the three blocks to compete for most spirited. Each day, I will continue to track who dressed up and which ever class dresses up the most at the end of the week will win a treat! This means that I will be taking the dressing up seriously. No more signs taped to our shirts. You must truly be dressed up. If always have the option to wear bobcat gear too! {If you are presenting and you dress up for that, that will also earn a point for your class. But again, it needs to be more than simply wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Show some effort to earn the points.}

To earn extra points, attend the events after school/at lunch and take a photo with someone to prove that you were there. For each photo/person who attends, the class will earn a point.
