Please read below to learn what is going on in all classes, and further down, what is happening in 9th grade English and AP Seminar.
We will be learning online all week. As we do so, please remember the five expectations that I outline last week:
- As always, be kind, polite, and courteous.
- Speak one at a time. Do not unmute yourself unless you have been asked to speak/called on.
- Use the chat to ask questions and to discuss; do not use it to be social.
- Be as present as possible, put your phone away, turn off notifications – Remove distractions.
- Be patient as we learn how to communicate via video and online. We can do it, but we need to work together to make it work.
As I planned out the activities this week, I did my best to keep them to what I would expect you to complete during a class period, without homework. How this actually plays out, and how much time the activities take you, is going to be individual and based on your environment.
Please note that any time that we are not having a video meeting, I am online and ready to chat via Google Hangout Chat or Google Hangout Meet. Don’t hesitate to call or message me on chat. I will answer as quickly as possible. I am here for guidance and support.
To help with time management, I created a simple blank template for you to track what is expected of you each period this week. You can find it via this link, on my Instagram profile, and on Google Classroom. If you want to use it, make a copy, and make it your own. I encourage you to take time each day to step away from your screens, to stretch, and to get as much fresh air as possible. Wake up, and give yourself time to wake up before coming online to do your schoolwork!
This week you will be learning about the mystery genre and how it differs from regular fiction.
- On Day 1 (Monday for ALL), you will take notes from the Google Slides that will be posted on Google Classroom. You will be required to handwrite these notes (unless we have previously discussed digital notes) and to upload an image of them to Google Classroom by 3pm. I will be tracking who does and does not follow these directions. That is how I will take attendance for the day.
- On Day 2 (Tuesday or Wednesday), you will read a short mystery story on CommonLit. I will release it on Tuesday morning for you to access. You will answer all of the questions on CommonLit for a summative assessment. The completion of the CommonLit assignment will be how I take attendance that day. I will be checking and submitting attendance at 3pm.
- I will be available for open office hours via Google Meet on Tuesday during “Panther Time” via this link (go to GC & email for link). This will be an opportunity to check in with me, ask me any questions you have, or to just say hi! This will be open to all 9th grade and AP students.
- On Day 3 (Wednesday or Thursday), you will check in with me via Google Meet again. I will send whole class invites for those meetings which will go to your email and appear in your calendar. This Goole Meet will be mandatory and will count for attendance. Then, you will go back to the short mystery story on CommonLit and this time you will analyze it for the mystery genre elements you learned about on Monday. On Google Classroom, I will post a digital worksheet that you will need to fill out as you analyze the story. This will also be a summative assessment. Submission of your worksheet by 3pm will be how I take attendance.
- On Day 4 (Friday for all, but A), will be an independent reading day. You are now moving into quarter four reading! The first step will be to choose a book. It can be any book of at least 300 pages. You will need to do a few things to show me that you got a book:
- Screenshot an image of the hard copy or digital copy of the book
- Give me a brief explanation of WHY you chose this book for this quarter, as well as the title of the book and the author!
- Read for whatever amount of time is left in the period 🙂 **There will be a Google Classroom assignment set up for this assignment specifically. The submission of the assignment is how I will take attendance.
On Monday, you will continue to do research. As you were to show me you had at least two pieces of research done by the end of Friday, now I want to see that you have at least five sources. I will check these and completion will count as your attendance. I recommend that you look at a minimum of 20 sources by the end of this project. You don’t need to show it all to me, but you should be looking at multiple perspectives, multiple sources, multiple media, etc.
On Tuesday, you will continue your research and begin outlining your essay. Your official outline is due on Friday, March 20, 2020. That will be counted as a summative grade. I will be checking in on your documents and leaving comments as I can, so please be sure to have documents attached to the Google Classroom assignments. As I check these I will count the submission as your attendance.

On Thursday, we will have a mandatory digital check-in (which will be how I take attendance). You will then continue to work on your outline which again, is due the next day on Friday, March 20, 2020. That will be counted as a summative grade.
On Friday, you will finalize your outline and will submit it by 11:59pm. I will post a check-in question on Google Classroom on Friday morning. By answering the question, you will be checking in for attendance.
