The Week Ahead: March 30 to April 3, 2020

Here we go with our third full week of online learning. And the light at the end of the tunnel is Semana Santa! 

Please read below to learn what is going on in all classes, and further down, what is happening in 9th grade English and AP Seminar. 

We will be learning online all week. As we do so, please remember the five expectations that have been previously outlined: 

  1. As always, be kind, polite, and courteous.
  2. Speak one at a time. Do not unmute yourself unless you have been asked to speak/called on. 
  3. Use the chat to ask questions and to discuss; do not use it to be social. 
  4. Be as present as possible, put your phone away, turn off notifications – Remove distractions. 
  5. Be patient as we learn how to communicate via video and online. We can do it, but we need to work together to make it work. 

As I planned out the activities this week (as I did last week), I did my best to keep them to what I would expect you to complete during a class period, without homework. How this actually plays out, and how much time the activities take you, is going to be individual and based on your environment. 

Please note that any time that we are not having a video meeting, I am online and ready to chat via Google Hangout Chat or Google Hangout Meet. Don’t hesitate to call or message me on chat. I will answer as quickly as possible. I am here for guidance and support.

To help with time management, I created a simple blank template for you to track what is expected of you each period this week. You can find it via this link, on my Instagram profile, and on Google Classroom. If you want to use it, make a copy, and make it your own. I encourage you to take time each day to step away from your screens, to stretch, and to get as much fresh air as possible. Wake up, and give yourself time to wake up before coming online to do your schoolwork!

Note: If you have an SLP or work with Ms. Montesinos and you are in need of accommodations as we work online, DO NOT HESITATE to ask for them. 

9th Grade

This week you will be learning about the mystery genre and how it differs from regular fiction. 

  • On Day 1 (Monday for ALL), you will continue to read and annotate chapters 2-4 of Murder on the Orient Express. I will have the chapters uploaded on Google Classroom just like last week. I will also have a set of questions I want you to answer at the end of your reading that you will submit in addition to your annotations.
  • On Day 2 (Tuesday or Wednesday), you will simply read chapter 5 and annotate it. Upload your annotations by the end of the class. 
    • I will be available for open office hours via Google Meet on Tuesday during “Panther Time” via (link available on Google Doc). This will be an opportunity to check in with me, ask me any questions you have, or to just say hi! This will be open to all 9th grade and AP students.
  • On Day 3 (Wednesday or Thursday), we will meet via Zoom and you will complete a timed writing assignment responding to a prompt based on the first five chapters of the novel. This will be a summative assessment. 
  • On Day 4 (Friday for all, but A), will be an independent reading day. 

Your homework for Semana Santa will be to read chapters 6-8 of Murder on the Orient Express and annotate them. You will have until Monday, April 13th @ 8am to upload the chapters to Google Classroom. You will also be required to answer a few questions at the bottom of the PDF you upload. The reason I am having you read over break is to keep our momentum going and so we can pick right back up after break. I have cleared this decision with Mr. M.

AP Seminar

On Monday, I will be checking for 1000 words by the end of the school day (aka 3pm). I have a quick AP update so I would like a quick Zoom meeting. I will email you an invite by Sunday evening. 

On Tuesday, we will complete a peer edit activity. In order to participate, I highly recommend having at least 1400 words written. We will do this via Zoom. I will create breakout rooms for you to peer edit so that I can pop in and out to hear your discussions and to answer questions. 

    • I will be available for open office hours via Google Meet on Tuesday during “Panther Time” via (link on Google Doc). This will be an opportunity to check in with me, ask me any questions you have, or to just say hi! This will be open to all 9th grade and AP students. 

On Thursday and Friday, you will continue to draft your IWA and you will have a few quick questions to check in on Google Classroom each day. Don’t hesitate to reach out via Google Meet to ask questions and get clarification from me as well as your peer readers.
